Do you know the Period Drama?

Little Dorrit.
Firstly, this is not a game. Just clarifying. Well, you could call it a game, I suppose, only I don't know the answers myself.

So I often find pictures of Period Dramas online - Pinterest, etc. - and mostly, of course, I know what Period Drama it is that I'm pinning from. Because I like to call myself a bit of an expert when it comes to Period Dramas - it's my one weakness, it's a big passion of mine, I know plenty. But there are always some I've never heard of, and there are many random Period Drama pictures I have found online that I don't recognise.

Could you help me satisfy my curiosity?

1. This is the actress - Um, Holiday Grainger, or something like that? - who played one of the Ugly Sisters in 'Cinderella.' I have no idea what movie this picture is from. Probably some Period Drama filled with unappropiate scenes; it looks like it. I know there's a movie in which she acts with Richard Madden (not Cinderella), but the fashion in this picture looks different.

2. I THINK I know this one, but clarification would be satisfying, haha. I think it's from the-Period-Drama-I-absolutely-DO-NOT-want to see, 'A Royal Affair.' I know, I know, Alicia Vikander looks gorgeous, but if this picture is from 'A Royal Affair', I can tell you, I still don't want to see it. It looks like the icky-est movie ever: I cringe at the trailer alone.

3. This looks SO GORGEOUS. What is this from. Tell me. (I'm guessing maybe Howards End? No idea. It looks very pretty, but looks might be deceiving.)

4. NO REALLY WHAT IS THIS PICTURE FROM. A young girl? In Edwardian clothes? This looks like a really cool movie. Does any of you know, by any chance? Yes? (Maybe this is one of the girls in Mr Selfridge, but I'm not sure. That's my guess, anyway.)

5. This looks pretty... muddy. I thought it was Return to Cranford first, because of the building-tent-thing, but it isn't. I don't recognise the actress either. I love the dress, though, with the lace collar and the PUFFS and the blue and the gatherings. Oh yes. :-P

6. The only Period Film I know Jenna Coleman in is Death Comes to Pemberly (oh and the new Victoria movie, but that's not out yet.) So I'm wondering what this is...

7. ISN'T THAT DRESS GORGEOUS. I mean just look a the way the skirt drapes so sheenily and evenly. And the frothy swishhhh. I love it. But, as you know, I have no CLUE what the movie is. Maybe it's the same one as the one up there (the picture which had a lady walking on dunes with a parasol.) It might be the same movie.

8. We all know why I am curious. THE PARASOL. And the hat. This looks beautiful. I'm guessing maybe 'A Royal Affair' (again). I HOPE it's not 'A Royal Affair', though.

9. Keira Knightley absolutely rocks the 40's style! No, I don't think she's a good Elizabeth Bennet - you know it all - but she looks absolutely gorgeous and adorable in here! I love her hairstyle. Is this Atonement? Or The Imitation Game? 'Cos both those movies have her in it, and are set during the 40's. (Emma, do you know?)

10. Lily James in Regency Garb and blonde hair. Hmmm. This isn't 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' (a weird movie coming up) because Lily James has brown hair in there. I have NO idea where this is from. I'm guessing maybe, um, 'War and Peace'? I don't know why I'm guessing that. But I guessed it, so there. :-)

11. For some reason or the other I think this is from the same movie as the Lily James picture. I'm guessing 'War and Peace.' It looks Tolstoy-ish.

12. Okay, I'm REALLY curious about this one, because it looks frightfully ridiculously GORGEOUS. Does anyone know? It looks like it could be Downton Abbey - maybe it's a character from season 6 that I'm not aware of yet? I have NO idea. I'd be really happy if one of you knew this. I'd thank you and maybe give you cake.

Help me!!! :-)

  1. Well, I do know #7, which is Anna and the King, but I wouldn't recommend that one (I never finished it; it's kind of violent). I'm no help as to the others though!

    1. Ohhh yes! Because Anna wears the prettiest clothes. Thank you for telling me. :-)

  2. Weeelll, I had some time, so I decided to Google Reverse Image Search all of these XD
#1 is from Bel Ami, which is rated R so you were right :)
    #2 looks like A Royal Affair. I'm sorry :(
#3 I have no idea, but your blog and Emma's came up as using it :D
#4 is apparently 13 year old Brooke Shields (Idk who that is tho)
#5 is dominique Mcelligott. And it looks like this a TV show that has a bad word in the title sooooo yeah...
#6 looks like that new Victorian movie. (Something about a nanny?)
#7 is Anna and the King like Awdur already said.
#8 idk. Maybe the Borgias or however you spell that if there's a movie about them?
#9 is possibly the Edge of Love (And yes, her hair is amazing!)
#10 is, you guessed it, War and Peace!
#11 is also War and Peace! Girl, you are good at this! (Also, it was partly shot in Belgium!)
Annnd #12 is The Painted Veil and the girl in the picture is possibly named Naomi!
    That was fun!

    1. Ashley, you are a GOOD SPORT. For Googling these! Thank you! :-)
Bel Ami... that sounds bad. :-P
Oh, The Painted Veil! Now I recognise Naomi Watts. :-) I'm not used to seeing her with blonde hair. :-)
Thank you for taking the time, Ashley! :-)

  3. Ohhhhhhhhhhh . . . these are gorgeous. I love them :) But sadly, I don't know most of them . . . I'm pretty sure that the Keira Knightley one is from Atonement. And yes, actually, she IS a great Lizzy Bennet. A fantastic Lizzy Bennet ;) But if you want to know something, I think that Daisy Ridley (the girl who's playing Rey in the new Star Wars movie) could be an even better Lizzy than Keira was, if they would only cast her in the role. Seriously. She would be WONDERFUL. She's got just the right "way" about her, if you know what I mean.

Sorry I don't know more of these . . . Oh, by the way, have you tried IMDb? That's a site that tells you all the movies any particular actor has been in, ever, plus the years. I find it really helpful when I'm trying to figure out "where was that picture from." Just google either "actor's name imdb"--or, alternatively, "movie name imbd" and you'll get the entire cast list.

    1. Yeah, sorry, I know you like that Lizzy. I just don't!!!!! Jennifer Ehle is Elizabeth for me. :-D The end. (Please lets not discuss this again, hahahaha.)

Oh, IMDb - yes I use that sometimes. I didn't know you could use it for pictures, though.

      Thanks for commenting, Jessica!

    2. I more brought it up 'cause I wanted to tell somebody my brilliant new theory about Daisy Ridley, haha :) Seriously, she's going to be GOOD. I can't wait to see what she does after Star Wars (and she'll probably get good roles, too, because Star Wars is so famous).

  4. Oh--this is a long shot, but #11 COULD be Mia Wasikowska. (You know, the actress who played Jane Eyre in 2011.)

    1. No, that's definitely not Mia. I recognise Mia Wasikowska immediatly when I do see her. :-D The actress' name is Clemence Poesy. Thanks goes to your sister for informing me of that. :-P

  5. I have this problem a lot. Isn't it annoying?

Okay, so I've done a bit of googling and have found five of these for you:

#1 is Holliday Grainger as Baroness Shilton in Anna Karenina.
#6 is Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald in Doctor Who.
#9 is Keira Knightley as Vera Phillips in the Edge of Love, I think. I'm pretty sure anyway.
#10 and #11 are both Natasha Rostova from War and Peace. #10 is Lily James and #11 is Clemence Poesy.

    You're welcome :P

Actually, it was a lot of fun! :)

    1. I see a lot of people are recommending reverse googling. I've tried it and now I've got the rest of the photos, just in case your computer doesn't do this:

#2 is Alica Vikander as Caroline Mathilde in A Royal Affair.
#3 is apparently not from a movie, it is just stock photo or a nostalgic photo.
#4 is an actress named Brooke Shields. I don't think it's any movie in particular (?) but perhaps just a photo of her.
#5 is Dominique McElligott, in a TV series called Hell On Wheels. Doesn't sound promising, does it?
#7 is Jodie Foster as Anna Leonowens in Anna and the King.
#8 may not be an actress. It is a photo used a lot on Pinterest but I can't find an actress or a movie to match with it.
#12 is Naomi Watts as Kitty Fane in The Painted Veil.

    2. Aw, Rosie, how sweet of you to Google these. My friends are too sweet. *blushes* Thank you!

How can they both be in War and Peace? Are they different versions?
Oh! 3 is not from a movie?!!!! I'M DISAPPOINTED. :-D I think it is from a movie, actually - I'm pretty sure I saw it somewhere. But maybe not. I'm hoping though, because it looks so pretty.
No, but 4 is so period drama-ish! It's got to be from a movie. :-D (Look at me, looking for new movies to watch. Haha.)

    3. I'm kind of confused myself. When you search Clemence Poesy on IMDB, it says she was Natasha Rostova in War and Peace. And when you search Lily James, it comes up with the same thing. Two different actresses for the same part?! There were many episodes though, so maybe one retired and the other took over? Or something like that.

Yeah, 3 and 4 look SO like they come from period dramas! I just can't seem to find them :P

Stay safe, Naomi. Terrorist attack warnings are scary . . .

    4. Rosie, Clemance Posey plaid Natasha in the 2007(?) version and Lily James is Natasha in the series that is coming out next year :)

    5. Thanks, that makes sense! I was beginning to think I was seeing things :P

  6. I was going to comment with a tip, but I think Ashley already used my idea. :) I'm not sure if it works on all computers, but for me, I can right click and image and in the drop down menu there is an option that says "search google for this image". It's really handy and will usually instantly show you what the image is from. Hope that helps! Some of these are really gorgeous photos!

  7. The Jenna Coleman one is from Doctor Who. She always wears the cutest clothes in it... though normally not Victorian.... can't tell you why she's wearing Victorian clothing in this one because SPOILERS!!!! ;)
I love 8! That parasol is lovely!

    1. Oh, so it's doctor who! I thought doctor who was set in the present time. I don't watch it, so I don't mind spoilers. Just saying. :-D

    2. Yeas that Doctor Who is called The Snowmen and it's set in Victorian England it it's beautiful!! but SO sad but SO good! =D

  8. #6 I think I've seen somewhere - next to a poster of an "upcoming" movie (a dark version of Mary Poppins). It was an April Fools poster, so they aren't really making it. But it might be from the photoshoot they did so they could put her on the poster? That's my guess.

#9 might be from a movie called "The Edge of Love". It has Kiera Knightly in it and it's set in WWII. I don't know anything else about it. :P

    1. Thank you, Jessica. It's pretty scary, yes. We don't live in Brussels (we live in Waterloo) but we go to Brussels a lot as our Church is there - we probably won't go tomorrow as there are plenty of police around the area. I pray to God nothing serious happens in the following days.

    2. I'm so sorry, Naomi. It must be really, really horrible to have this happening so close to where you live. I remember being VERY scared when the World Trade Center attacks happened on 9/11/01, because we were only a few hours from New York City at the time (although I was only 7 so I didn't understand everything as well as the adults did).

Terrorism is so awful. I'll definitely be praying for you and everyone in Belgium.

  11. Thanks to Natalie's tip I CRACKED IT!!!! ;D I've always thought #3 was actually a painting, but it's not. It's from The House of Mirth done in 2000. Here's the link I found: http://periodmoviecaps.blogspot.com/2010/01/house-of-mirth-2000.html

It looks absolutely gorgeous, but it's also off Edith Wharton's novel and I have absolutely NO idea as to content.

  12. Ooh this is one of my favorite things! I actually love tracking down photos :) and while I think other people have covered a lot very well, I do have some things to contribute that I was able to find :) I think #3 is from a movie called The House of Mirth which looks very depressing and not too great unfortunately. (I found a blog which actually has the same picture you have here: http://periodmoviecaps.blogspot.com/2010/01/house-of-mirth-2000.html). #4 is from a movie which I am not going to say the name of because I looked it up and wished I hadn't because it turns out it is GROSS and Not Appropriate At All I'm not going to say anything else about it because EW. :( And I looked really hard all over the internet for #8 and I guess I'm going to have to go with Rosie saying it isn't from any movie. It is super pretty though! So there you go :) You should do this again sometime, it was really fun! (And I don't think I've commented before but I just wanted to say I love your blog <3)

  13. And yes, it seems #10 & #11 are both Natasha Rostova from War and Peace -- different productions. Lily James is in the (soon to be released?) 2015 BBC film and Clemence Poesy played the part in the 2007 mini-series broadcast in France and Belgium. (To quote on that one: "War and Peace is a 2007 French-Italian miniseries directed by Robert Dornhelm. It was broadcast in Belgium and in France in four parts during October and November 2007.")

I don't know anything more about either one, but hope to check them out more someday after maybe eventually finishing reading W&P. Have a ways to go to finish! ;)

  14. All I know is that the Jenna Coleman picture is from Doctor Who. She's one of the Doctor's companions. :) Not sure if someone already commented that, but I don't want to take the time to read all of the answers. :) I'm pretty sure the Keira Knightely one is from The Imitation Game, but I can't be sure because I haven't seen it. :)

  15. I DO NOT want to see 'Royal Affair' either! It looks awful! I made the mistake of watching the trailer (but didn't finish it). :P *shivers*

  16. Oh, dear. I haven't the faintest! Except maybe for #5 and #9: Those might be from Cold Mountain and Atonement, respectively, but I'm by no means certain. But all this eye candy was lovely, so thanks;)

  17. Hello,
Pretty sure the pic of Brooke Shields (#4) is from the film Pretty Baby which is set in the Edwardian Period. Hope that helps and sorry if someone has already pointed that out.
