My five favourite JA adaptations

~*~
.1. Pride and Prejudice 1995

You should ALL know this. This is not only my favourite Jane Austen adaptation - it's basically my favourite movie (well, mini-series) in the whole world. I adore it, ardently. Everything about it - from the wallpaper in Mr Collins' house to Elizabeth Bennet's beautiful blue spencer. It's basically my idea of bliss. :-) I LOVE IT TO BITS. There will be a long review very soon, so stay tuned. (Or, in other words, you've been warned. Heehee.)

~*~
.2. Emma 2009

Ahhhh. Gahhh. I'm hopelessly in love with this Mr Knightley - he's perfect and EVERYTHING ASWHDHDOH. I also love everything else about this movie - Emma's impeccable wardrobe, the curls, the bun - the FACIAL EXPRESSIONS. Also, the scenery is blissful. Just an amazing movie in general. (Probably not only my second favourite JA movie, but just my second favourite movie, period. Yeah, I love Jane Austen movies.)

~*~
.3. Sense and Sensibility 2008

I love both versions of Sense and Sensibility to bits, but my favourite will have to be the 2008 one. Of course, skip the first scene, but THEN - THEN you're in for such a surprise. You have Dan Stevens being impeccable (!!!!) as Edward Ferras, and you have a movie surprisingly close to the book.  I mean, the other S&S didn't have Edward's visit and Edward's visit is like, my favourite part in the book. Also, gorgeous locations and sea-side scenery. Seriously, this movie needs a rewatch. I love it.

~*~
.4. Sense and Sensibility 1995

Of course, this version has a special place in my heart too. I mean, it's a classic and ohhh... such memories. Also it has the BEST Mr Palmer in THE WORLD. I ADORE Hugh Laurie's Mr Palmer - it's PERFECT. Also, Mrs Jennings is PERFECT. And ohhh, all the funny lines. I also prefer Kate Winslet as Marianne. Yes, this movie is awesome. And, ohhh, the MUSIC. :-)

~*~
.5. Northanger Abbey 2007

And last but certainly NOT least, we have Northanger Abbey!!! Ah, dear Northanger. Every time I love the witty-ness, the Bath-ness, the sparkly-ness, and OHH I WANT TO BE CATHERINE. I loooove Henry Tilney; his sparkle in his eyes, and his kind heart. It's just a fun movie all around. :-)

What are your favourite JA adaptations?

  1. #1. Yes. :)
    #2. Yes. :)
#3. Um, it's okay. It does have some charming parts, and I know some people prefer the Dashwood girls to look like the ages they are supposed to be, but I happen to adore the Dashwood girls in...
#4. :) I know, I know - Elinor is ancient (relatively speaking), but she plays her part so well. And Marianne is Marianne. Plus the awkward scenes, perfect timing, humour - it is simply wonderful. It's not perfect, of course, (what movie is?) but if you overlook Colonel Brandon's voice (which is just kind of odd), the rest of it is pretty lovely. :) (And yes, Hugh Laurie is perfect as Mr. Palmer! :) )

    1. I see what you mean about S&S. :-) yes, Emma Thompson does an excellent job and I agree totally about Marianne. I don't like the Marianne in the 08 version much at all. :-) I love them BOTH. :-) Alllmost equally. :-)

    2. Kate Winslet set the bar too high for Marianne (not a bad thing). I don't know if any actress could possibly come close to matching her performance. :)

  2. Pride and Prejudice 1995 and Emma 2009 are the ultimate Jane Austen adaptions in my opinion! They're just THE BEST! I like Sense and Sensibility 2008 for all the scenes with Edward and Elinor (I really liked those two!), but overall I think I like the 1995 version better. It has more of a proper Jane Austen feel, I think. The 2008 one struck me as rather dark. (And Willoughby was AWFUL!)

Haha! Mr. Palmer! Yes! He's hilarious in the '95 version! He and Mrs. Palmer are great!

I haven't seen Northanger Abbey yet, but I want to. Henry Tilney is one of my favorite Jane Austen heroes (along with Mr. Darcy and Mr. Knightly of course)!

By the way, where DID you get all the lovely pictures??? Did you make the collages yourself? They're lovely!

    Beautiful post, Naomi!

    1. I know. They are the two best. :-)
Yes, I agree with you on Whilloughby. Greg Wise's Whillouby is my favourite ALL THE WAY. And same about Mr Palmer and Mrs Palmer, duh. As I said, I love both S&S versions a LOT. :-)
No, I took the pictures from Pinterest. As usual. :-P

  3. I think you pretty much listed my favorites! I do like Persuasion 2007 a lot as well though.

    1. You have a good taste then. ;-P I never was very fond of Persuasion 07. I don't really know why...

  4. These are some of my favorites too! I need to rewatch the newer Sense and Sensibility. I really liked it when I watched it a couple years ago. I think I still like the 1995 version better though.

    1. I need to rewatch S&S08 too. I've only seen it once! :-)

  5. #1 -- Yes, I've been warned :P Just kidding, I knew that would be coming :)
#2 -- YES JONNY LEE MILLER IS THE PERFECT MR. KNIGHTLEY!!! When I read the book I couldn't really "see" Mr. Knightley - perhaps because a lot of the book is from Emma's perspective and she's known him her whole life. But I will always think of Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightley . . . and Romola Garai as Emma. I love her red beret :)
#3 -- YAY! S&S '08! I agree. 'Tis the best version. Over all they made a really wonderful movie the way everything fits together, color and setting and acting. Just. Amazing. The. End. AND COLONEL BRANDON!!! Don't even get me started ;)
#4 -- As everyone can obviously see, I like the '08 version better, but I agree that this one is pretty good too :P I love the part where Elinor sits down on the stairs and philosophically drinks the cup of tea :D
#5 -- I've never seen this. But everyone else seems to love it. Henry Tilney . . . *coughs* you know my views :P

I enjoyed reading this, Naomi! I would've put S&S '08 first, but I know *your* views on P&P '95 :) Same goes for the absence of P&P '05 from the list, I suppose *sniffs*. Kidding there :P

    1. Hahaha, yes. You've been warned. :-)
I KNOW JOHNNY LEE MILLER AS MR KNIGHTLEY. I will forever loooove him. :-)
Haha, yes, when Elionor drinks tea while all her other family members cry in their respective rooms. It's actually funny, almost. :-)
Yes, that's okay. We may be different. I'm glad we can joke about it, haha. :-)

  6. My favorite is probably S&S 95. I just LOVE it. It's my ideal Jane Austen ambiance -- plus a bunch of awesome actors and great music. Emma would be my second favorite.

Northanger Abbey was so adorable! I didn't love it, but I remember how much fun Sadie and I had watching it, and then how much fun I had reading regency-era novels in my bed at night and pretending I was Catherine. :-)

Darn, I can't do this post cause my answers would be pretty much the same as yours... :P
    Great Post tho!

  8. Yes, I agree so much. P&P 1995 is the best period drama series ever made! And Emma *sigh* the beauty, the acting, the perfect Mr Knigtley..
I personally prefer the 1995 S&S to the 2008, but differences in opinions are luckily allowed;)
I love NA, Henry Tilney is so sweet. I finally got it on DVD the other day and can't wait to rewatch it.

Of course differences in opinions are allowed. I love the two S&S VERY closely, though. :-)

  9. YES YES YES. This is awesome!

My favorite Austen adaptation is the '08 S&S. IT'S JUST DA BESTEST. But I really like all the others you mentioned, too, and HENRY TILNEY!!! Movie-Tilney, that is. Book-Tilney is not quite as lovable.

    1. AHH I KNOW. S&S08 is really really good. :-)
I love the book-Henry too! I think it's pretty much the same as the movie Henry, actually. Only we don't see his face. (JJ Field's face, that is. Hahaha.)

  10. #1--Well, you know my sentiments :) I do agree, though, that Colin Firth was amazing in that movie.
#2--YES! That was such an awwwwwwwwesome film! Really, Emma and Mr. Knightley are both absolutely brilliant. It's like the book characters came to life. I love it.
#3--Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Now we come to my FAVORITE Jane Austen adaptation EVAH. In fact, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. The acting, the writing, the scenery, the costumes . . . It's awesome. And not to mention it has DAVID MORRISSEY AS COLONEL BRANDON. Who is *my* official Ideal Man. End of story. Elinor, Marianne, and Edward are all fantastic, and I actually really like this movie's interpretation of Willoughby--I know he's worse than JA actually wrote him, but I think it's much more realistic and true-to-life that way. And plus, we get that AWESOME scene where Elinor . . . never mind. You know. We already talked about this :)
#4--I do like this movie. But it isn't my favorite. It's cool, though.
#5--This is one I've never actually seen. Does it have any Objectionable Content or anything? (I was told that it did and that's one reason I've hesitated.)

    1. Thanks. I'm glad you like Colin Firth. :-D *Pats shoulder fondly*
Ahhh, Emma 2009. I LOVE IT SOOO.
I love your enthusiasm for S&S08. It's really contagious, did you know that? Yes, we have talked about the Elinor/Whilloughby scene. (Is that even in the book? I've forgotten.)
I'm going to publish a review of NA soon, so you'll see my opinions on it then. ;-)

    2. Yes, the Elinor/Willoughby thing is in the book--but it's not as satisfying because Elinor doesn't tick him off like in the movie, she goes all soft and feels "sorry" for him--and I get VERY VERY MAD. Seriously, Jane Austen, I love you but you made a big mistake there. Elinor wouldn't do that.

  11. I have to say, I've watched the 2007 version of Northranger Abbey and it was beautiful!!! And I have watched the Pride and Prejudice (with Mark Darcy) in it and it was beautiful as well.

    1. I know, it's really lovely, NA is. :-) I haven't seen that P&P version! Do you mean the older one? The one before the Colin Firth one? I think that's the one you're talking about.

  12. I'm desperately fond of P&P05 and Emma 1996 with Gwyneth Paltrow. I also greatly enjoy Northanger Abbey 2007 and P&P95, and also S&S95 and Persuasion 1995. (My word, 1995 was a good year for Jane Austen fans!) I've only seen Persuasion 2007 once and really want to give it another try, as I think a second viewing will make me like it much more. I haven't seen any version of Mansfield Park and have gathered from other Austen fans that I'm not missing much there. I do really want to see S&S08, though.

    1. I know you are. :-) I enjoyed Emma 1996 too, but to me the 2009 still wins.
I know, right! I thought that too lately! That's also the year in which my parents married, so I'm really fond of that year. :-)
Same. I haven't seen any MP versions either. None of them really attract me. :-/

  13. I must turn off our computer soon because it's currently 33 degrees Celsius (or, if you use Fahrenheit, that's 91.4 degrees) inside so I must hurry!
You have pretty good taste! I love all these movies (except I haven't seen Northanger Abbey. Actually my library has it and I'm considering booking it in - are there any 'bad parts' that I am to be aware of?) and I agree with you. Except the order. :-P Well, I don't know, I can't decide WHICH I like better! I think my list would be like this:
    1. Emma 2009
    2. Pride and Prejudice 1995
    3. Sense and Sensibility 2008
    4. Pride and Prejudice 2005 (*hides in a corner*)
    5. Sense and Sensibility 1995
If I was to change it, I'd probably switch 2 and 3 around. Mostly because I've seen P&P '95 A LOT, and S&S '08 not as much. ;-)
Still, I loved reading your answers. :-D

Haha, you don't have to HIDE. I don't mind if people enjoy that version of P&P. I just... don't. :-P
Glad you enjoyed this, Miss Meg!
